Why I hate stereotypes ?

I hate stereotypes. Why? Because it will drag you to become narrow minded in the way of your senses to respect a community. Some people called me terrorist, because I am moslem. Some people called me second level residence, because I am Asian. Some people called me nerd, because I don't drink and don't do shit.

Stereotyping and generalization are the basic human being’s reaction. It’s subconscious and is triggered and formed based on our background, education, culture, social upbringing, etc. We can’t help it. And the judgment is personal, individual. Stereotyping is practiced by everyone about other communities or segments of the same community.

Although I hate it, stereotypes are inherent to human nature, and for good reason. We are all stereotypical of fire. We don’t touch it because we know it will burn us. We are told never to touch snakes because they are poisonous. So aren’t we being stereotypical when we don’t go near these things? Aren’t we being stereotypical when we take a bite out of a banana rather than a red hot chile pepper? Stereotypes are survival mechanisms. In the earliest times of our existence we placed stereotypes on things like lions, wolves, bears, and crocodiles because it was necessary for our survival for us to automatically leave the vicinity as soon as we spotted them. Today, in times of war we place stereotypes on men in uniforms; we know they should be avoided or at least treated with great caution if we value our lives.

But we are smart creatures. We are intelligent and curious. We can understand the majesty of a crocodile; such an ancient animal that has survived for us to witness still. We can feel empathy for the great polar bears that are loosing their homeland to the sea like so many of us soon will. We admire the love and companionship wolves feel for one another. We understand peppers are best eaten in conjunction with other foods. We can tell the difference between cobras (rattlers, mambas, you name it) and pythons (garden snakes, etc.).

Unfortunately that’s bit tricky when it comes to world’s society. In society we often hear stereotypes about others. Although sometimes they are questionable, but here are lists about stereotypes I had heard in my community:

Turkish usually thinks Arabs are not trustworthy

French are considered the worst drivers

Dutch are stingy

British are too proud

Australians have no culture

Australians drink beer

All red haired girls are easy

Americans have fat arses

Chinese are good at business

Jews are greedy

White people are uneasy around minorities

Indonesians are Racists/Tribalists.

Indonesians are moslems and all moslems are terrorists.

Regardless the narrow-minded labels the society put, however, it does detract from the credibitlity of the message that the person is transmitting. I think it is very important to respect others by NOT mis-juding them. We could practice to hold back this prejudice, wait for a second, let our brain think, to form the second opinion after we interact with each individual. It’s not easy, it needs a lot of practice and open heart to do so. I do, sometimes, bitching people. But knowing it’s wrong, and trying to do our best to stop stereotyping and generalisation is the first step.

The point is, the predjudices against people are exactly the same. I’ll be perfectly honest with you when I say if I see a group of young guys, black, white, or asian, standing on a street corner in a city just hanging out I will turn around and walk away as fast as I can. You could say I’m being racist. Or sexist. Or…age-ist. I say I’m saving my skin. But that doesn’t mean if I were to encounter any of those boys on different terms that I wouldn’t be polite to them, or give them something other than the respect every human deserves. My advice: just give people the benefit of the doubt. Most people are just that: people like you or me. Treat people the way you would like to be treated.

On The (Apparently) Lost Art of Dressing for a Job Interview

It's what I call Career Fair at Colorado School of Mines, during which the students visit with prospective employers in the market for freshly minted scientists and engineers. I've seen a lot of very nicely dressed men today. Almost all of them wore clean, good-fitting suits with pressed shirts, and ties. They’ve recently had haircuts, and are even polishing their shoes. They look ready for the world.

The ladies, *sigh* I am sorry to say, are quite a different matter. Many of them look very put together. Great going, ladies! But, many others, so many more than the guys …well, let me tell you that as one who has interviewed people for jobs, I’m not particularly impressed. Thank goodness they haven’t been from the Geophysics Department ....

If you’ll indulge me and my apparently archaic thoughts for a moment, ladies, especially in this economy, you need to dress not just for the job you want now, but for the one you want in ten years. How you dress for an interview tells people a LOT about you. Unfortunately the famous quotation " don't judge a book by its cover " does not work here. You can say that’s just superficial malarkey but it’s really not. Regardless of how you'll wind up dressing once you're employed, looking polished to potential employers sends the message that you care about the details. And every career involves detail. It also tells people that you consider these opportunities important enough to dress for them. Particularly in this economy you want to be the candidate with the edge, and sometimes it makes all the difference to give an amount of thought to your appearance that you’d normally consider excessive.

So, this is just first contact, you say? A Career Fair is not *really* an interview, so you should look nice but don't need to look over the top? The person you’re speaking with today could well be same person who’ll interview you if your resume gets past the first review - and first impressions are often the most indelible.

That said, ladies, if you're trying to dress professionally then LEAVE THE FLIPPING FLIP-FLOPS AT HOME. I've lost count of the number of young women walking around in nice outfits in the past couple of days but who were wearing those cheap thong sandals you buy at Walmart for a buck. One of them was in desperate need of a pedicure, too. Now, I don’t know that they aren't changing into/out of better shoes for the situation but several were coming out of the Student Center—it’s a good bet that several of them wore that get-up into the Career Fair. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned, but seriously? C’mon, girls - if we can take the time to polish a decent pair of shoes that see the sidewalk maybe twice a year, then surely you can throw on a pair of close-toed heels and nylons for a few hours? There is a time and a place for sandals. An event connecting you to the world’s biggest and most enduring engineering firms is neither the time, nor the place.

I know that this one is vexing for many because we now seem so fixated on a comfort-is-king mentality but this is a sacrifice to comfort that you should consider making.

Hey I am not fashion stylist. Just sayin’.

Surat dari Pengadilan Denver

Kaget setengah mati. Itu adalah respon saya pas menerima surat dari Denver District Court (alias Pengadilan Negeri Denver) sekitar 4 hari lalu. Surat yang ngga sembarang orang bisa dapet. Selain seorang tersangka kriminal atau saksi kriminal, ternyata orang yang bisa dapet surat ini adalah juror. OMFHG - apa apaan ini ?????? Awalnya pas dapet surat ini kirain ada kaitannya dengan penilangan mobilku sekitar 3 minggu lalu (baca ceritanya dsini). Kirain si polisinya masih ada problem sama saya sehingga masih pengen adu ~~jotos~~ mulut di pengadilan. Hmm, tapi perasaan problem itu uda selesai. Saya uda bayar denda tilangnya jauuhhh sebelum jatuh tempo. Saya juga ngga kena tilang lagi habis itu (aduh amit amit). Trus ada apa ini ?

Waktu tanya ke Public Safety Department di kampus sih dijelasin bahwa ternyata surat itu ngga ada hubungannya sama kasus penilangan 3 minggu lalu (alhamdulillah). Tapi, dijelasin sama si yang jaga kantor, kalau pemilihan juror itu sifatnya random. Bahkan untuk international student pun masih bisa kepilih. Wow, macem undian lottery aja.

Kembali ke topik besar : apa itu juror ? Well, kalau tanya ke saya sih pastinya ngga bakal saya jawab - karena saya juga ngga tau apa itu. Awalnya kirain juror itu macem nama kota di Singapore (Jurong) atau judul film yang dibintangi Demi Moore tahun 1996 (The Juror). Karena pengetahuan ilmu hukum saya super cethek (dan saya ngga pernah tertarik sama ilmu ini), akhirnya googling-lah saya dan nemu jawabannya di mas Wikipedia :

" A jury (juror) is a sworn body of people convened to render an impartial verdict (a finding of fact on a question) officially submitted to them by a court, or to set a penalty or judgement. Modern juries tend to be found in courts to ascertain the guilt, or lack thereof, in a crime. Juries are composed of jurors (also sometimes known as jurymen), who are by definition layman finders of fact, not professionals. "

Kira kira bisa duduk manis ngedengerin 1 kasus sampai 3-7 jam di pengadilan bo.

DUENK. Sebuah penjelasan yang sebenernya ngga menjawab pertanyaan saya, karena saya ngga paham sama maksudnya -_____- . Apalagi kalimat terakhir yang menjelaskan kalau juror itu ngga diambil dari kalangan profesional (yang paham hukum). NGEHEEKKKK. Kalau uda kayak gini pengen rasanya ngobrol sama karakter Elle Woods (di film Legally Blonde) buat tanya tanya tentang penting ngga-nya dateng sebagai seorang juror di pengadilan. Tapi rasanya ngga perlu repot" tanya ke Elle Woods, karena di salah satu halaman suratnya tertulis :

Hadeehh, nyebai. Ini surat kok maksa banget sih? Punishment yang sangat ngga fair (menurutku). Sok penting banget cuma gara" punya status District Court trus bisa maksa seseorang buat hadir pada hari dan tanggal tertentu (meskipun sebenernya emang iya kalau menurut kekuatan hukum America). Sebenernya curhat di blog ini pun juga ngga bakal membantu. Orang yang dapet surat ini udah ibarat kayak orang lagi sakit perut dan uda mau buang hajat : satu"nya jalan adalah mampir ke WC.

Kalau lawyer-nya saben tersangka kriminal di District Court secantik Reese Witherspoon (Elle Woods di film Legally Blonde) mungkin lain ceritanya : saya bakal berkomitmen dateng saben sidang :P

Sejauh ini sih lagi berusaha didiskusiin sama IIE, lembaga US yang ngurus" student VISA saya dsini. Kok bisa international student pemegan J1 visa bisa dipanggil buat juror sebuah district court (and I am not even a permanent resident !!). Oh tidak, sumpah males banget kalo beneran harus ke Court !!!! :'(

1st International Workshop of Rock Physics

Sebenernya postingan ini ditulis pas acara workshopnya lagi berlangsung - HA ! Jadi inget jaman SMA sering curi curi waktu buat garap pr matematika ditengah pelajaran bahasa endonesa.

Genap 2.5 hari ikutan acara Workshop Rock Physics yang 95% pembicaranya adalah para maestro / dedengkot Rock Physics kelas dunia. Pusing bukan main ini kepala ngedengerin dan menyimak topik diskusi Rock Physics yang super advance. OMG, rasanya pengen ngegundul kepala yang uda gerah seperti Britney, lima tahun lalu. Ibarat Jogja-Semarang, topik" yang dibahas dsini uda nyampe Ambarawa atau Ungaran. Sedangkan ilmu saya masii cethek, baru nyampe sekitaran Jalan Magelang atau sekitaran TVRI, syukur" kalau nyampe Ring Road utara atau sekitaran IndoMaret sonooh. Parah dah. Beberapa pembicara yang hadir dan papernya sering aku baca antara lain Colin Sayers, Luca Duranti, Ronny Hoffman, De-hua Han, Tizinia Vanorio, Ralf Weger, Douglas Miller, dan Rob Lander.

Kata Dr Manika Prasad, salah satu adviser di research group aku yang juga ketua panitianya, acara ini sebenernya uda mau dibatalin karena sedikitnya paper dan sponsor yang masuk. Tapi tiba" pas H-1 deadline, sejuta paper dan sponsor malah rebutan pengen join acara ini. Paper yang masuk ada lebih dari 130, kemudian diseleksi lagi jadi 58 oral presentation dan 18 poster presentation. Belum lagi sponsorhsipnya yang nyampe > $40 K (menurut si website). That's life, you should never give up until the last minute ends ! Sebagai salah satu antek antek Rock Abusers, secara otomatis aku kebagian jadi committee untuk teknis acara bareng" anak" Rock Abuse lainnya. Enaknya jadi student yang bantu" acara ini, tentu saja kita ngga perlu bayar mahal ($300) buat ikutan acara ini. Trus bisa ketemu dan kenalan sama para Rock Physicist senior yang uda lama melintang di kancah per-oil-and-gas-an. Berasa ketemu seleb.

Beberapa topic presentasi yang aku suka sejauh ini :

1. Seiji Nakagawa - Laboratory seismic monitoring of supercritical CO2 flooding in sandstone cores using the Split Hopkinson Resonant Bar technique with concurrent x-ray CT imaging. Score 7/10. Aku emang lagi suka dengan teknik" imaging rock physics. Sayangnya sempet ada kendala audio system, jadi ngga optimal dengerin presentasinya :(

2. Elizabeth Diaz - Digital Rock Physics Reveals Link between Reservoir Quality and Pore Type in Eagle Ford Shale. Score 8/10. Keunikan pore type untuk Eagle Ford Shale emang lagi seru"nya dibahas belakangan. Eh gayung bersambut, ada yang presentasi tentang topik ini.

3. Helen Yam - Simultaneous ultrasonic measurements of wave velocities under conditions of CO2 saturation. Score 8/10. Topik tentang CO2 sequestration + ultrasonic measurement sejatinya adalah rencana ide topic besar thesisku setahun lalu. Tapi berhubung sekarang uda ganti haluan, presentasi ini lumayan menghilangkan rasa penasaranku sama CO2 sequestration.

4. Luca Duranti - Philosophy in the Lab: Epistemological Perspectives on the Theory of Poroelasticity. Score 9/10. Sebenernya presentasi ini lebih kayak kuliah Filsafat Ilmu. Persis kayak kuliah gelombangnya Pak Budi ! Cuma bedanya dsini presentasinya ngga ngaret lama kayak kuliah gelombang, apalagi nunggu sii presenternya dateng telat 1 jam - uhh, ngga banget. Ngeliat judulnya uda langsung dapet firasat buruk, ada embel embel 'epistemology' yang menurut Wikipedia adalah cabang dari ilmu filosofi. Tapi karena materi presentasinya yang rock physics banget dan ngga bersifat menggurui, makanya presentasi ini cukup mengena di hati (ceilah). Bahkan baru tau kalau rumus Gassmann yang non-empiris itu pernah dibuktiin sama Grant (1994). Whoa keren banget!! Jadi pengen baca papernya.

5. Zakir Hossain - Biot’s and squirt flow mechanism of greensand as interpreted using NMR data. Score 7/10. Sebenernya penasaran sama gimana dia menginterpretasi Biot's coefficient dari NMR data. Selebihnya sih angkat tangan deh - ngga paham ! -__________-

6. S Klarner - Depth dependent rock physics trends for Triassic reservoirs in the Norwegian Barents Sea. Score 8/10. Sebenernya ngga ada yang terlalu special dengan topik berbasis geophysics exploration ini. Cuma Triassic reservoirs in daerah North Sea terkenal challenging buat diexplorasi.

7. Douglas Miller - Anisotropic static and dynamic moduli from a pair of shale plugs cut parallel and perpendicular to bedding. Score 9/10. Presentasi ini dibuka dengan kalimat : We use the word 'shale' to refer to things that are fundamentally quite different. Thesis sentence yang lumayan nonjok dan diamini semua peseta workshop. Materi presentasinya sendiri ngga terlalu baru buat aku, karena di research group udah ada yang melakukan project serupa bahkan untuk angle 45 derajat juga.

8. Louise Duffy - Textural change in mudrocks and shales through chemical compaction. Score 9/10. Ahhh, saya memang selalu suka dengan topik berbau chemistry / geochemistry. :)

9. Colin Sayers - Stress-induced anisotropy in soft sediments. Score 9/10. Topik si spesialis geomechanics ini sangaaaaattt menarik banget. Soft sediments (a.k.a sedimen untuk depth <1000ft) ternyata physical behavior berbeda dengan petroleum system rocks nun jauh dibawah sana. Keren. Keren. Keren.

Ngga terlalu banyak presentasi yang berkaitan sama topic thesis sih, tapi lumayan dapet bekal banyak tentang perspektif lain dari Rock Physics. Bahwa Rock Physics menyentuh banyak aspek, ngga cuma experment di lab, tapi juga di advance seismic processing, AVO - AVAZ, belum lagi drilling, stimulation, fracturing, etc. Sampai ikutan pusing dan kuping jadi panas pas ada diskusi hanget (tadinya sih anget, eh tau" jadi panassss bangettt) tentang hubungan plastis deformation versus elastic properties. Ada yang menduga brittleness batuan itu memiliki andil untuk membantu terjadinya fracture, ngga cuma sekedar horizontal stress saja. Whoa, boro" ngomongin fracture Pakdhe, wong Geostruk aja saya ngulang ! Pokoke rock physics for life ! (kok jadi ikutan motto galaunya si Dwikong?) -____-

Besok adalah hari terakhir workshopnya, moga masih bisa diberi kesempatan buat nonton banyak presentasi keren lagi :)

Sekilas info Ramadhan : hari ini genap puasa hari ke-10, so far udah skip sahur 7x ! Ha !

My very close friends would have known me that I am huge fan of hip hop dance. Not that I personally dance, but I loved watching people did poppin', lockin', breakin', new jack, old school dances.

Aduh Mak ~ Ane Ditilang ! T_T

Yep - saya baru aja kena tilang. Mana kena tilangnya abis nonton bioskop Captain America pula. Jadi agak" badmood nih (opo seh). Trus ketilangnya di Mines Park, apartment kampus buat para mahasiswa CSM, dimana aku uda driving selemot mungkin (10 mph). Ternyata nyupir pelan pun tetep bisa ngelanggar lalu lintas. Jadi bukan cuma supir truk Pantura yang bisa ketilang. Mahasiswa gahool, unyuuu, dan ekseees pun bisa ketilang ~ ra nyambung.

Ticketing atau kena tilang adalah takdir terburuk untuk seorang pengendara kendaraan di US. Bukan tentang ganjaran hukumannya sih, tapi juga denda yang dikenai. Biasanya nominalnya bervariasi tergantung pelanggarannya. Kalau pelanggaran tunggal bisa kena denda $20 - $50. Kebayang ngga tuh kalo pelanggarannya berantai. Menurut si ibu polisi kampus ini saya ngelanggar aturan lalu lintas, karena ngga stop di 2 stop signs sebelum belokan (aduu muuv bupol- gelabb bgt sii tadyy mah #ngeles-alay).

Ya udah sii, karena saya juga uda ngantuk, akirnya saya ngga terlalu mendebat si ibuk polisi itu. Takutnya malah tar dikira nantangin trus saya ditembak di pelipis karena kebanyakan bacot. Abis saya serahin driving license, title, dan car insurance mobil, saya nunggu sekitar 10 menitan di mobil. Paling norak kalo ketilang dsini adalah lampu mobil polisi yang muter" itu DINYALAIN terus sampe prosesi penilangan kelar. Mending kalau siang hari - rada" ngga keliatan. Lah ini malem jam 9.40 pm. Aduh mayuuu banget, mana itu ketilang di kompleks apartement. Jadi semua orang bisa liat dari jendela. Entah kenapa lampu merah-biru-putih nya itu kelap kelip kenceng banget, berasa lagi disko di jalan. Untungnya sih muka kita ngga disorot senter selama 10 menit juga ye (duile macem film horor aja).

10 menit berlalu, akirnya si ibu polisi itu ngasi wejangan supaya next time awas dengan rambu" lalu lintas. Trus gimana daerah Mines Park itu rame manusia, jadi kudu ati" driving mobil. Sebelum cap cus, si ibu polisi ngasi kertas penilangannya. Sesuatu yang baru kali ini saya dapet dan saya tunggu". Saya ditilang $50. Sebuah angka yang ngga sedikit. Itu bisa buat 7x nonton film. Bisa buat 1x ganti oli mobil. Bisa buat 2x isi bensin full tank. Bisa buat beli 3 t-shirt CSM. Bisa buat belanja bulanan 1x. Bisa buat beli 17 kotak susu volume 2 liter. Beli krupuk bisa dapet berapa? Tadinya si ibuk polisi ngasi opsi pilihan untuk sidang. Opsi pilihan yang jelas ane tolak mentah". Saya ngga ingin berakhir seperti Lindsay Lohan. Saya ngga ingin bikin para fans kecewa.

Mungkin sebagian bakal bilang malam itu saya lagi apes? Well, menurut saya sih itu teguran kalau saya kurang berbagi rezeki belakangan dan terlalu sibuk sama diri sendiri. Sibuk nulis thesis bikin jarang kumpul sama temen, jarang ke mesjid, dan jarang nyapa orang? Oke deh - mari kita iklaskan $50 itu. Bakal saya bayar denda ticketing itu besok. Niatkan sodakoh. Itung" menjelang bulan Ramadhan (cieee njuk dihubung2ke ngunu). Mari kita buka lembaran baru. Lembaran tulisan thesis yang ngga kelar" maksudnya >.<

Tribute to Amy Winehouse

I was terribly shocked to hear the news :

According to The Daily Mail, singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead in her London home today (July 23). She was only 27 – the same age as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones and Kurt Cobain (yes - all of these are great vocalists / musicians) when they passed away. Winehouse had been battling drug addiction for years; it has yet to be confirmed if an overdose was the cause of her death (it makes me even sad). She was best known for her 2006 Grammy Award-winning album Back to Black, which featured the hit single Rehab.

Her talent will be missed. What I like about her is her authenticity of music. She wrote, recorded, and produced songs which captivate people with her powerful contralto voices and her eclectic music of various music genres including RnB, jazz, and soul. Thank you for these tears. RIP, sweetheart. :'(

My confessions to you :)

I wanted to share a list I made of things I love about myself to you. Yeah it seems really egotistical but I believe we should love ourselves more. I have spent most of my life hating myself for all kinds of things so its time to start loving what God has given. Here is some of my confessions of love to you! I would love to see some of yours!

Things I love about myself: Physical

1. I love my hands… they are tireless and strong … I believe God made them like that because He knew I would have written lots of papers / journals :)

2. I love my dark hair … it is wavy - I used to hate it, but now I think it’s what makes me distinctive.

3. I love my freckles. My dad gave me. Someone once told me I look like a chocolate chip cookie. I thought …….yummmmmmm :D

4. I love my feet! They are so big, and quite flexible. I liked to spin quite often when I was kid.

5. I love my big physique. I may not look like an athlete of some sort, but I can do many things.

6. I love my voice. I am gifted with two types of voice : baritone , the very deep-low-manly voice (only happened every time I woke up in the morning) or tenor, high pitch-squeeling voice (this is my regular voice). Although I would loved to have the low register voice better, the regular voice granted me job as radio announcer when I was in college.

7. I love my dimples. None of my siblings had these !

8. I love my eyelids. I like the shape, they support my eyes to be looked bigger.

9. I love my skin because it is soft and never gave me any problems as a teen !

Things I love about myself: Emotional

1. I love my ability to feel emotion. I feel so many feelings and I feel them with the heartiness of a chili….. nice and thick!

2. I love my sense of humor because I don’t take myself too seriously and I make fun of those who do…. It tends to make everyone laugh.

3. I love my melancholy side. I never hiding or distracting myself from not feeling anything to people.

4. I love my fire like competitive side because it pushes me to be the best that I can, I am never satisfied with mediocrity, I love to win.

5. I love my ability to communicate to others using all different kinds of mediums—whether it be writing, teaching, talking, listening, — I do it with clarity and with much passion.

6. I love my sense of loyalty because I am true-blue, I try my best to do unto others as I would have done unto me.

7. I love my perfectionist habit, I never dare to squander my time by going through the motions.

8. I love that I have a gift for inspiring. I think God wanted me to be a school teacher or something- I am really good a breaking things down and making things fun at the same time.

9. I love that I have a thirst for knowledge. Knowledge about any and everything- I read tons of books on so many different subjects- I am always hungry for wisdom.

10. I love my ability to be resilient. I have failed and fallen many times but I always get back up and try again.

Things I love about myself: Spiritual

1. I love my connection with God. It is so unique and unusual. God speaks to me in so many ways.

2. I always believe anything happened for reasons.

3. I love my intuition - It is always right, every time I stray from it I learn a BIG lesson.

4. I love prayer - I love to communicate with God and count my blessings. I love when my prayers are answered, they always are, even when I doubt.

Geofisika itu GUE (Gahool, Unyuu, dan Ekseees)

Haha, judul diatas oke banget kali ya kalau dijadiin semboyan prodi Geofisika. Trus dipampang di pintu masuk prodi GF : Geofisika itu GUE (Gahool, Unyuu, dan Ekseees). Jeng jeng jeng. Dijamin Pak Kirbani bakal tersenyum hohoho saben pagi.

Semboyan diatas tercetus pas lagi chat sama Bams, seorang maba yang bukan masuk kategori sotoy (baca postingan tentang maba sotoy dsini). Abege Jekardah ini entah bisa"nya selalu online hampir 21 jam sehari. Dulu sempet mikir kalo dia punya warnet atau semacamnya. Atau jangan bokapnya yang megang kendali koneksi internet Endonesa. Tapi ternyata dia emang lahir dengan bakat tahan melek dan online lama. Sebuah bakat langka yang cuma ada pada 1 dari 10 bayi di daerah berkode pos 11820. Brarti kuat juga nonton wayang atau ronda malem.

Sebenernya judul postingan diatas ditulis cuma memacu supaya anak GF UGM lebih berani jadi diri sendiri dan ngga takut buat stay unique. Sejak 4 tahun belakangan, trutama sejak era ngelamar" gawe di semester 6-7-8 dulu, label G dan E (gahool dan ekseees) lumayan saya sering gaungkan. Alasannya simple aja : banyak HRD / users perusahaan yang ngecap lulusan UGM dengan embel embel low profile, kalem, kerja bisa digaji murah, manuters, kaku, kurang dinamis, etc. Embel-embel yang sebenernya ngga terlalu bermasalah, toh itu cuma stereotype. Bener atau ngga nya, balik ke orangnya. Alas, namanya stereotype itu sulit buat diubah di sebuah society selama kitanya sendiri yang ngga mau mengubah citra itu dan buktiin ke society kalo anggepan itu (mungkin) keliru.

Adalah seorang HRD di Chevron yang dulu terkejut setelah menginterview saya. Bukan karena saya gantengnya setengah mati. Mbak HRD berparas menor ini menyimpulkan kalau saya lebih cocok mencitrakan mahasiswa ITB , Trisakti, Gunadharma, atau UI ketimbang UGM. Sebuah pernyataan yang bikin kaget, entah saya harus bangga atau tersinggung ? Mana sudi saya disejajarkan dengan mereka! Dia menjelaskan lagi jarang sekali ada anak UGM yang seperti saya, ganteng dan imut. Eh salah, maksudnya jarang ada anak UGM yang bisa terbuka dan open minded (huh?). Kayaknya si mbaknya ini dulunya jago ngeles geje, kayak si Danast neh.

Lalu karena sedikit gondok, sejak itu saya gaungkan ide gahool dan ekseees cuma semata" biar anak" UGM pada open minded. Menurutku sih selain tersebut diatas, anak" UGM juga kurang jago kalo urusan jual diri. Padahal jual diri (alias bacot narsis, kalo kataku) itu penting banget. Gimana perusahaan yang kamu lamar bakal ngerekruit kamu kalau kamu sendiri ngga kenal, ngga percaya, dan ngga bisa ngejual potensi diri ? Dan ngejual diri untuk interview perusahaan itu ngga seperti ngejual diri ala street walker. Butuh teknik juga, terutama kemampuan komunikasi, kemampuan ngeles, dan kemampuan nunjukin sok-pede-padahal-grogi-minta-ampun.

IPK tinggi memang ngejamin seseorang untuk lolos seleksi berkas, tapi angka yang terdiri dari 3 digit itu ngga bakal menjamin kita lolos tahapan rekruitmen kerja. Kadang" para pelamar mentok di bagian interview, semata" karena mereka ngga siap dan ngga tau harus gimana? WTH. Oleh karena itu kita harus ekseeees biar ngga grogi ngobrol di depan orang banyak. Banyakin latian ngomong sendiri di depan cermin. Sebenernya musuh paling besar saat oral presentation (baik itu interview, sidang skripsi, pidato 17an, atau ngomong sama pacar) itu adalah diri kita sendiri. Kalau sudah cukup ekseees, hal yang perlu diwaspadai berikutnya adalah topik. Jangan sampe ngobrol atau jawab pertanyaan tanpa tujuan. Oleh karena itu perlu juga wawasan yang oke supaya nyambung ngobrol apa aja. Makanya itu kita kudu gahool. Gahool dan ekseees bakal mubadzir tanpa adanya rasa ke-unyu-an, yaitu rasa tepo seliro dan saling tenggang rasa antar sesama. Jadi anak GF itu harus gahool, unyuu, dan ekseees. GUE banget dah.

Why Geophysics ?

Judul diatas adalah pertanyaan klasik yang disodorin panitia OPMG dulu ketika saya baru masuk jadi mahasiswa baru. Ketika pertanyaan itu dilontarin sama mas Bowo [GF'03 - yang saat jadi mc OPMG), saya langsung pregnant pause saat itu juga, alias membeku seketika berasa abis kena jurusnya Subzero. Bingung mau jawab apa. Jujur ada waktu itu emang ngga siap jawab. Dan ngga mungkin dong saya kasih jawaban ala finalis Putri Indonesia, " Saya percaya bahwa kemajuan ekonomi Indonesia ditentukan oleh seberapa sedikit tingkat pengangguran di negeri ini. Oleh karena itu saya berharap program studi Geofisika ini dapat memberikan saya gawe pas saya lulus nanti. Terima kasih. (sambil pasang senyum Ciptadent ke juri dan penonton) " . Bisa2 saya masuk klan galau, macem Dwikong atau Fatah. Akhirnya saya jawab sewatonnya kalo saya pengen gawe di ConocoPhillips kayak bokap. Jawaban absurd.

Percaya atau ngga, lingkungan di sekeliling kita sedikit banyak mempengaruhi jalan dan pilihan hidup kita. Bahkan untuk sebuah pilihan studi di jenjang universitas. Teman saya begitu lulus SMA pengen jadi dokter karena kedua orangnya adalah dokter. Adiknya teman ayah saya ada yang jadi pelukis / artist (dan kemudian masuk ISI) karena dia ngefans sama Affandi. Inspirasi memang bisa dari mana aja, termasuk si motivator satu ini yang (secara ngga langsung) ngenalin saya ke Geofisika.

Adalah guru SD kelas 4 saya bernama Pak Wazim yang dulu terkenal sebagai guru super bijak. Guru SD Ungaran II Yogyakarta ini terkenal jago cerita dan bisa mengajar siswa"nya dengan asik. Dia salah satu guru favorit di SD saya. Salah satu pelajaran yang saya suka dulu kalau beliau mengajar adalah pelajaran PSPB (nama jadul pelajaran Sejarah) - dimana kadang beliau bakal minta murid"nya untuk pentas di depan kelas terkait topik sejarah yang lagi dibahas. Trus tar kita improvisasi dialog-nya super ngaco (ala anak SD) tapi dengan benang merah topik sejarahnya yang tetap dipertahankan.

Poto bareng para guru SD Ungaran II - kembali lagi ke SD 10 setahun kemudian setelah lulus. Ki-ka : Ivano, Piput, Melati, Pak Wazim, Bu Oom (guru agama), Bu Wahyuni (guru olahraga), saya.

Suatu ketika si Bapak ngajar pelajaran IPA dengan topik interior bumi. Sebuah topik yang kalau buat saya (yang saat itu lagi tergila" sama mainan Tazos-nya Chiki, Chitato, dan Jet Zet) jelas sesuatu yang baru. Si bapak ini, seperti biasa, nerangin materi yang lumayan berat untuk ukuran anak SD dengan gemilang. Salah satu penjelasan beliau terkait dengan topik yang dibahas adalah tentang inner core yang padat, outer core yang cair, mantle, crust, etc. Lalu ada salah seorang temen saya tanya darimana kok manusia bisa tau pembagian strata tersebut di dalam bumi, secara itu kan di bawah permukaan. Lalu dijawabnyalah oleh beliau, " Mereka para geofisikawan adalah orang orang yang menemukan pembagian strata itu berdasar sifat gelombang gempa (seismik). "

Wuidih, anak SD dicekokin beginiann? Beratt dah, tapi untuk saya ternyata sangat worth it ! :)

Entah kenapa, dengerin jawaban si Bapak itu laksana embun di pagi buta. Seger banget. Sedikit berle memang. Tapi mungkin itu juga karena sosok beliau yang begitu karismatik, setara sama Tina Fey waktu dulu maen di SNL. Singkat kata sih sejak itu tertarik pengen jadi seismologist. Kayaknya keren dan asik bisa neliti bumi. Dan kalau pengen jadi seismologist, ternyata harus belajar Geofisika dulu. Kalaupun pada perjalanan tes UM UGM dulu saya menempatkan Geofisika di pilihan ketiga (setelah Teknik Kimia dan KG di pilihan 1 dan 2), itu semata" karena passing grade aja. Toh nyatanya tetep aja jatuhnya di Geofisika ini.

Jika dulu ngga diajar dan terinspirasi oleh Pak Wazim, mungkin saya ngga bakal jadi geophysicist sekarang. Lalu, darimana inspirasimu masuk jurusan kuliah dateng? :)

Music concerts in the U.S

If there's one thing I wanted to experience badly ever since I came to the U.S ~~besides working my ass on thesis~~, that would be attending music concert. I definitely ♥ music. Some of my absolutely-have-to-watch concerts are Aretha Franklin's, BB King's, and Christina Aguilera's. Unfortunately none of them had had concert during my stay here. :(

Anyway, here are recap for music concerts I have ever been (by date) in Denver :

1. Ke$ha (September 7, 2009)

It was the first music concert I ever had in the U.S . I was not a fan her, tho I listened to some of her stuff. Ke$ha was really huge that year. She had 4 songs in top ten Billboard's chart. Yes, she sang live (though it was horrible beyond measured). Sound system was on control for any kind of her electro-pop songs. But I would rather described her 'concert' as party, not as a music concert.

Best live act : when she opened the concert with Tik-Tok, the people went kuh-ray-zeeee ! The party has just started !
Best live song : Your Love is My Drug. A very cheesy song.
Ticket price : $55, not too bad for new comer.

2. Paramore (November 11, 2009)

Okay, to be honest I am not huge fan of rock. But, as my best-friend took me out for the concert and it was free (she won radio quiz and got double free tickets), I thought it was not bad idea. It turned out the concert went INSANE. Mosh pits everywhere. People acted as they just had ecstasy.

Best live act : when the lead singer (Hayley Williams) sang acoustic version of Ignorance, it's so emotional
Best live song : Ignorance
Ticket price : hey it was free ! hell yea

3. David Foster (December 12, 2009)

He is amazing. Everybody know him as the producer of many big hits (Bodyguard OST by Whitney Houston, After The Love Has Gone by Earth Wind and Fire, Because You Love Me by Celine Dion, etc). The concert went very smooth, something that I would have excepected from David Foster. He brought other brilliant singers to share the stage (Katherine McPhee, Josh Groban, Cheryl Lynn, etc) with.

Best live act : anytime he played the piano !!
Best live song : After The Love Has Gone sung by some black vocal group from CO.
Ticket price : $110, it was the cheapest -______- but it's worth it !

4. Black Eyed Peas (March 27, 2010)

Who does not love this group ? I think they are phenomenal, either individually or as group. The epic part was coincidentally that day was Fergie's bday ! Then in the mid of concert all of us sang birthday song to her.

Best live act : their solo performances - exhibit different side of BEPers
Best live song : I Got The Feeling - BEP shared positive energy into the room !
Ticket price : $36, super duper cheap ! yes we sat at the very back of the hall -_____-

5. James Morrison (June 22, 2010)

Watching his live performance was the first British musician's concert I've ever been. I dunno if it's just me, but I think British musicians have more power to attract people. They know how to behave on stage and some of them got soul (ex : Adele, Natasha Beddingfield, Duffy). The concert itself was at Red Rocks Amphitheater (and it was summer !)

Best live act : when some of the stuntman threw free water bottles to audience apparently a man got bashed by that bottle ... buahahahahaha.
Best live song : You Give Me Something. What a wedding song.
Ticket price : $50, I think it's kinda expensive for open door concert.

6. Norah Jones (August 1, 2010)

I can't believe I went to her concert. It's not that I don't like her, but the concert was at noon ! Anyone wants to hear blues-jazzy concert while the sun burn you out? But truly, her voice was so breezy. I don't listen to her music quite often, but I did sing along with her on 'Come Away With Me' , 'Don't Know Why', or 'Here We Go Again'. The concert was at Red Rock's Amphitheater .

Best live act : when she sang 'Don't Know Why' then suddenly she kept quiet and let the audience sing 1 verse.
Best live song : Don't Know Why. I think this is Norah Jones' anthem.
Ticket price : $35

7. Linkin Park (February 17, 2011)

Geez, I missed Mike Sinoda and Chester Bennington a lot. Nowadays there are not much musics as what they delivered 8-11 years ago. Vocally, both of the lead singer still got some power. Chester were still able to hit the high notes on 'Crawling'. Mike rapped like the old days perfectly on 'Papercut'.

Best live act : Its sound system was damn purrrr-feeeecctt for rock concert. I think my ears were bleeding afterward.
Best live song : My December
Ticket price : $80

8. Janet Jackson (April 3, 2011)

YEAY ! I was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited to witness her live ! Thanks to sister-brother, I grew up listening to her musics. I think the 80's has some of the best enjoyable music. Janet does not only define RnB, but also she's great performer / dancer. At the age of nearly 50, she showed that age is only number.

Best live act : Rhythm Nation's dance routine - it's so legendary.
Best live song : Nasty, I was screaming like hell.
Ticket price : $210, over expensive as I wanted to watch her as close as possible - hey it's worth it !

9. Boyz II Men (June 4, 2011)

I personally agree that Boyz II Men is the best male RnB vocal group, period. They have this emotional ballads, complex, intricate acappella harmonies. They were among the groups responsible for changing hip hop into a mainstream popular music genre in 1990's. Their performance in Denver was invited by Colorado Symphony Orchestra. As you would imagine, all of theirs songs were done in orchestra ways.

Best live act : as they sang 'End of The Road' suddenly, they asked the audience to stand up and sang together .. it was amazing how people were literally moved by their voices.
Best live song : Water Runs Dry. This song has always been my fav song of them.
Ticket price : $115, reasonable for orchestra concert.

What's next? In near future I would love to see live performance from Adele, Green Day, Blink 182, or Eminem. :)

G3Of!$ 2011

Seminggu terakhir ini jumlah aktivitas facebook saya dipenuhi oleh sejuta undangan friend requests. Bukan sembarang requests, sebagian besar dari mereka ini ternyata kiriman dari para mahasiswa baru Geofisika 2011. Era penerimaan mahasiswa baru (maba ~ mahasiswa bau?) memang baru aja berakhir. Puluhan ribu remaja ABG seantero Indonesia telah mempasung nasibnya di PTN yang mereka mau. Yang ketrima di pil pertama ya syukur. Pilihan kedua juga syukur. Pilihan ketiga harus tetep bersyukur. Saya dulu ketrima di pilihan ketiga (Geofisika UGM) lho. So far sih saya ngga pernah menyesali pilihan yang sempet ditentang keras sama ayah-ibu. Ra urus, kadang memberontak itu perlu.

Berbicara tentang Geofisika2011, angkatan termuda ini konon berjumlah total 99 jiwa dengan 70% diantaranya berkelamin pria (fakta yang tidak menarik). Bisa dipastikan, si ketua OPMG (Dwikong) pasti bakal tambah galau. Galau for life ~ gitu semboyan dia katanya. Trus empat mahasiswa barunya adalah jebolan SMA 1 Jogja. Woohoo. Balik ke topic - tentu saja, ketika sebagian requests mereka saya approve, entah kenapa sebagian dari mereka ini nganggep kalo saya maba juga alias GF2011 or at least bukan GF04. I've always been a huge fan of National Geographic Magz. I even subscribed their monthly Indonesian magz back when I was undergrad. They always pictured the best representation of diversity, culture, life.

9. The ShamWOOHOO! -- NigaHiga

This guy is freakin' hilarious. One of his trademark is his fast talking like radio adds. Not to mention that his 'shamwoohoo' accent and expression is just awesome.

8. Kids React to Rebecca Black - Friday

Thefinebros' channel is definitely one of my fav youtube channel. I think they really understood and lived on the definition of 'online entertainment'. One of my fav is 'Kids React'. Every sunday morning they uploaded new video with different topic / person / video to be commented and judged by kids.

7. Mariah Carey - Fantasy (Madison S Garden 1995)

I am definitely one of her crazy billion fans. However, her music and style back in mid 90's was the best. She was the perfect example of 'girl next door'. Her song, Fantasy, is also my favorite summer theme song.

6. Beat Freaks Compilation

The Beat Freaks is an all- female dance crew from Los Angeles, California. Each of its nine members had achieved individual success dancing before the creation of the group in 2003. The Beat Freaks were featured on MTV's America's Best Dance Crew (Season 3) and finished the show as runners-up. One of the reason I idolized them so much because they are so dooooope !

5. Bon Qui Qui Flight Attendant

Anjelah Johnson is one of my fav comedian besides Chelsea Handler, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph and Adam Sandler. She is young, sweet, and had fresh humor. The first time I saw Bon Qui Qui was on Mad TV, I put lots of honour to this young lady. To be able to impersonate black lady with the annoying - slapstick attitude is not easy. I respect you girl !

4. Badinding Dance - International Day CSM 2009

It is my own video from my own youtube channel. My friends and I performed at International Day, 11 Nov 2009 at Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado, USA. Performers are mostly students of Colorado of Mines, with some addition from Indonesian community. Badinding dance is originally from Minangkabau, Sumatra. I am second from the left !

I grew up with Green Day. The first song I listened on was 'Basket Case' from their third album 'Dookie' (1994). Since then I became addicted to this punk rock band. AAPG Rocky Mt Section 2011

Tepat seminggu yang lalu saya berangkat ke Cheyenne, Wyoming untuk mengikuti short course dan berpresentasi ria di event AAPG Rocky Mt Section. Event yang sejatinya ditujukan untuk para petroleum geologist dan kroni"nya ini merupakan agenda rutin tahunan untuk grup AAPG di sekitaran Rocky Mt Section. Entah kenapa tahun ini eventnya diselenggarakan di kota yang 'normal'. Biasanya ni event dibesut di daerah tengah" Rocky Mountain sejenis kota Grand Junction (CO) atau Durango (CO) yang kalo kesana nyetir butuh waktu 4-6 jam dengan medan kelak kelok ekstrim Rocky Mt macem kelokan lintas barat Sumatra. Tapi karena kebetulan belum pernah singgah di Cheyenne, WY, saya cukup excited lah untuk road trip ini. Jarak dari Golden lumayan deket, sekitar 1.5 jam saja.

Dalam hidup ini, hal yang paling saya ngga bakat selain ngepel, nyupir bis, dan panjat pinang adalah packing. Entah kenapa bawaan kalo packing itu males nian. Lebih males daripada belajar kalkulus 2 (duile). Pernah kepikiran untuk packing pke tas kresek macem abis belanja di Mirota. Kayaknya praktis en tinggal masuk semua gitu. Tapi jelas itu mustahil, apalagi kalo traveling naik pesawat - dikira mau buang sampah jangan". Bermodalkan tas traveling polo ukuran medium, akirnya packing pakaian untuk travel yang cuma 4 hari ini selesai dalam waktu 3 jam sodara2 ! Itu termasuk seleksi mau-pake-baju-warna-apa-ya-untuk-conferencenya dan berapa-cawet-harus-dibawa ?

Adalah sebuah kesalahan fatal untuk pergi keluar kota di hari Jumat sore. Traffic bisa dipastikan macet total : orang" tua buru buru pulang kerja untuk kembali bersama keluarga, yang muda muda pengen cepet" balik untuk persiapan Friday party. Jadilah perjalanan kesana memakan waktu hampir 2 jam lebih dengan cuaca sangat terik. FYI karena summer matahari dsini tenggelam baru jam 8.30 pm, sedangkan saya berangkat jam 5 sore yang teriknya matahari selevel jam 1 siang di Jogja.

Setelah check-in dan istirahat singkat di kamar motel, sekitar jam 9 pm kurang akhirnya pengen ekseees ke downtown. Kebetulan Cheyenne ini bukan kota yang gede (padahal Capital State), perjalanan ke downtown cukup deket cuma 3 menitan. Ini kota sumpah sepi banget, macem Racoon City-nya Resident Evil. Satu satu pusat kehidupan yang bisa ditemui malam itu adalah Celtic's Musical Arts Festival di Depot Plaza, sebuah area terbuka di tengah" downtown. Sesuai judulnya, Celtic's, dipastikan dsini bakal dijumpai pernak pernik berbau Irish - Scotland yang kental yang unsur warna hijau. Ada juga pengunjung yang make baju NBA Boston Celtics. Event ini juga dimeriahkan oleh penampilan country music band.

Lokasi Plaza City ini sebelah"an dengan Depot Museum, bangunan yang berumur sekitar 2 abad lebih. Di sekitar museum ada orang jualan pernak pernik celtics, mulai dari pernak pernik berbau hijau, salib"an, crescent, dll dengan harga (tentunya) ngga murah.

Setiap boot punya tema masing". Ini adalah boot dengan tema "Governors", jadi disitu ada tanda tangan semua governors WY dari era abad 19 awal. Dimensi boot sekitar : 2.2 meter tinggi dan 1.5 meter lebar.

Hari ini ikutan one day course tentang unconventional reservoir petrophysics di Little American Hotel. Udah sering ikutan course petrophysics, tapi belum pernah yang sedetail seperti ini terutama yang bersinggungan sama unconventional. Pembicaranya adalah beberapa nama yang sering banget aku baca papernya when I started to learn about rock physics. Pembicara pertama adalah Michael Anthony. Dia adalah murid dari Dr. Pickett (yang nemuin Pickett plot - buat yang bermain" di petrophysics pasti tau lah yaaa). Beliau sendiri adalah jebolan Mines sama seperti Dr. Picket dan bokap dari Anthony Holmes, si presiden DWLS yang ngumumin juara II poster SPWLAku bulan Mei (baca postingan blog SPWLA dsini). Dia ngasih materi fokus di CBM, capillary pressure, dan organic rich rock. Pembicara kedua adalah Robert Cluff. Dia ngasi materi seputaran shale gas, gas shale, oil shale, dan sedikit demo tentang software petrophysics buatan perusahaannya. Short course ini bener" ngasih wawasan baru tentang petrophysics dan juga beberapa ide untuk interpretasi data thesis.

Ternyata ikutan course seharian suntuk bikin perut lumayan keroncongan. Tanpa aba", begitu selesai course langsung cabut ke Thai Resto yang disaranin sama si receptionist motel. Thai resto ini lagi" terletak deket banget sama Depot Museum dan satu jalan ke arah Capitol Building. Resto yang katanya baru buka 1 minggu ini cukup cozy sebagai tempat nongkrong. Dsini ternyata ada orang Indonesia kerja, mas Sutan namanya. Dia ternyata dulu tinggal di Aurora, CO dan baru pindah ke WY satu bulan. Dsini aku pesen Masaram Curry. Kari yang aku belum pernah nyobain ini ternyata dihidangin pake alpukat dan kacang walnut. Kombinasi yang ngga lazim (or at least aku ngga familiar) untuk makanan Asia. Trus abis lunch lanjut belanja. Lagi" lokasi belanjanya, yep, berada di daerah" deket Depot Museum (omigod!). Kota ini sepertinya perlu diinvasi oleh para hedonist biar lebih hidup sedikit. Jadi ceritanya belanja di toko The Wrangler. Yep ini toko jeans Wrangler pertama di daerah Rockies. Bangunannya lumayan nyeter dengan dominasi warna merah ngejreng dan tulisan The Wrangler yang keliatan dari jarak 100 meter. Karena ini toko jeans, ya saya belanja jeans. Meskipun banyak juga dia jual boots dan topi koboi dengan harga bisa untuk isi bensin mobil 7 bulan. Mahal banget, sekitar $100-$300. Ironisnya kalau jeans kok murmer banget, yang aku beli harganya $18.

Hari ini sengaja ngga niat pergi atau hangout kemana". Ceritanya mau latian dan baca" lagi materi presentasinya. Tapi kenyataannya ? Pas siang malah pules tidur -______- . Bangun" uda lumayan sore. Karena belum breakfast dan lunch, akhirnya diputuskan untuk cari makan dulu. Kebetulan lagi napsu pengen makan American Food. Akhirnya pergilah saya ke Dinner Show Cafe, lokasinya lumayan deket sama motel. Disana pesen menu : Ribeye Steak and Shrimp Grill lengkap dengan salad dan noodle soup sebagai appetizer dan dessert. Uniknya, pertama kali liat dan ngerasain si noodle soup ini berasa seperti soto ayam Indonesia. Persis. Kecuali noodlenya dsini pake macem noodle kwetiaw instead of noodle bihun. Enak enak enak.

Pulang makan, seperti janji semula, akhirnya diniatin untuk review materi presentasi. Entah karena waktu itu lumayan niat atau emang ngga bisa tidur, untuk pertama kalinya dalam sejarah sinau 8 jam (8pm-4am). Whoa !! Alhasil, bisa dipastikan pagi berikutnya bangun (rada) kesiangan.

Seperti perkiraan awal, hari ini bangun super telat : 9am. Whoa. Padahal niatnya pengen ikutan opening AAPG conference, alhasil dengan modal terburu", baru nyampe acaranya jam 9.45am. Untungnya pembukaannya belum selesai. Acara yang dibuka T. Anderson (ketua Assoc. of Geological Wyoming) ini ternyata berakhir jam 11.45 am. Alamak, lama banget untuk ukuran pembukaan conference yang terbilang lokal ini.

Selesai pembukaan, langsung cabut untuk lunch. Kali ini yang aku incer adalah Korean Food. Sebenernya tiap kali ke Korean Food yang aku incer itu Kimchi-nya. That's it. Entah kenapa rasanya yang sepet" sedikit pedes itu bikin ketagihan ni lidah. Ternyata lokasi Korean Resto menurut GPS berlokasi sekitar 3 miles dan (untuk pertama kalinya) NGGA deket sama Depot Museum. Hurray. Setelah perjalanan 7 menitan, akhirnya tiba di resto Korea kecil ini. Lokasinya sih menurutku ngga terlalu strategis, cuma pengunjungnya pas lunch cukup memadati ruangan resto ini.

Setelah membaca menunya yang menawarkan banyak variasi makanan Korea, akhirnya pilihanku jatuh ke paket Bulgogi (beserta nasi pulen dan kimchi) + beef egg rol sebagai appetizer. Ngga terlalu lama menunggu, sekitar 10 menit kemudian makanannya dateng. Jreng jreng. Cara mereka menghidangkan seperti layaknya Korean Resto lainnya.

Selesai makan siang, langsung balik lagi ke acara AAPG. Banyak temen" dari Mines yang presentasi hari ini. Chloe, Matt, dan Patricia presentasi poster. Sedangkan Alejandra (satu research group) presentasi oral sore ini. Dr. Steven Sonnenberg (salah satu profesor Geology beken di Mines) malah ngasi 2 presentasi oral hari ini dan 3 sisanya di hari Selasa dan Rabu. Ngeliat animo penonton yang rame (trutama di bagian poster) bikin semangat untuk unjuk gigi esok harinya. Uniknya, di forum poster presentation ini ada juga speaker yang bawa core, batu outcrop mereka. Salah satu presenter dari Weatherford malah bawa 9 cores utuh dari posternya - jadi para pengunjung bisa megang dan liat langsung tu cores. Trus ada juga yang presentasi tentang natural coal fired rock, trus dibawanya contoh batu, taneman hasil kebakarnya. Poster paling heboh dengan desain dan ukuran paling besar dimiliki oleh geology student dari CU Boulder. Topik dia tentang impact dari tumbukan metorit di daerah CO. Posternya full colors, dengan memakan 3 poster boards (lainnya cuma butuh 1-2 boards saza). Presentasi Alejandra tentang mechanical properties of Niobara formation malah lumayan dapet sambutan hangat dari yang nonton. Congrats fellas ! Ikut seneng.

Hari ini adalah adalah alesan utama kenapa saya bela2in nyupir jauh" ke Wyoming. Ini adalah hari dimana saya bakal presentasi perdana di event AAPG. Meskipun ini kata orang 'cuma' level Rocky Mt, tapi pressure dari nama besar AAPG tetep kerasa. Dateng ke tempat conference sekitar jam 7.30 am, ternyata sudah ditunggu panitianya untuk submit ppt. Saya jadi satu"nya presenter yang belum submit presentasi untuk session itu -______- .

Selesai breakfast yang memang disediain untuk presenter (yang scramble eggs-nya enak bangettt itu), saya langsung cabut ke ruangan conference. Berlokasi di Grand Room C, presentasi saya digilir pada urutan 7 dari 8 presentasi yang ada. Salah satu keuntungan dapet presentasi ngga di urutan awal adalah adaptasi ruangan dan penonton yang menurutku itu penting banget. Kadang salah satu problem di oral presentation adalah kendala teknis yang muncul di tengah" kita presentasi, yang kalo ditelaah lagi itu kadang salah si presenter juga yang ngga terlalu familiar sama ruangan dan alat bantu presentasinya. Presentasi di AAPG meeting ini sedikit di atas standar menurutku. Beberapa presentasi di hari sebelumnya malah ada dual monitor dan presentasinya direkam segala. Untuk presentasi hari ini ngga seheboh dan sebombastis hari kemarin sih, cuma tetep masii diatas standard conference geoscience pada umumnya.

Beberapa presentasi sebelum aku fokus di masalah geothermal, uranium, coal, completions, engineering economics, dan fractured shale plays. Topic" yang cukup heterogen. Salah satu presentasi sangat menarik berjudul 'Five Things I Wish A Geologist Had Taught Me' oleh M Vincent. Jadi orang ini nih drilling engineer yang uda gawe 15 tahun. Presentasi itu dia kemas semacam pengakuan dosa tentang apa apa aja (dari Geology) yang para production / drilling engineer kurang perhatian / ngga paham. Dia mengemas presentasi sangat 'lezat' dan enteng didengerin. Ngga salah kalau presentasi dia dapet standing ovation dari para penonton. Emang keren banget sih.

Kelar presentasi ke-6, akhirnya tibalah giliran saya presentasiiii !! Woohoo, antara deg"an, grogi, gelisah, pengen cepet" kelar, semua perasaan campur aduk jadi satu. Pembukaan presentasinya sih lancar" aja. Masuk tentang motivation - previous works juga lancar jaya. Masuk tentang penjelasan singkat organic geochemistry biasa aja. Giliran nyentuh sedikit tentang organic petrology, baru agak sedikit gelagapan. Baru sadar, aku SALAH TULIS. Dueeengg. Harusnya 'American coal samples show low percentage in inertinite and high percentage in liptinite', malah aku tulis sebaliknya. OMIGOD. Untungnya sih sadar pas presentasi, kebayang ngga tuh kalau antara presentasi dan data menunjukkan fakta berbeda. Setelah organic petrology, lanjut nerangin rock physics. Di bagian ini sih, karena emang uda hafal di luar kepala, presentasinya lancar" aja. Nah di tengah" ini, pas lagi ngeliat ke penonton, aku baru sadar kalau si Michael Anthony ada di deretan para penonton ! OMG, ngapain dia nonton segalaaaaaaa. Entah kenapa habis itu, penjalasanku jadi rada belepotan. Grogi ditonton sama si petrophysicist super expert itu -____- . Akhirnya sesuai jatah presentasi 15', saya menyelesaikan presentasi itu jugaa. Ada pertanyaan dari beberapa penonton, termasuk dari Michael Anthony sendiri yang nanya masalah weak elastic anisotropy equation yang saya pake. Zzzz, pertanyaannya susahh banget sii. Selesai presentasi, dikasi tau sama si salah satu bulenya kalau ada acara pembagian award di siang hari.

Selesai session presentasi, masih dalam suasana keringat dingin, saya memutuskan untuk ke downtown cari lunch buat makan. Saya putuskan ke Chinese Restaurant. Entah kenapa saben traveling, pasti saya wajib ngejajal Chinese Food di area itu, kayaknya setiap daerah itu beda rasanya. Aku sendiri coba nyoba buffet lunch di Twin Dragon. Karena waktu itu pas jam makan, banyak banget orang pada makan disitu. Beruntung, masii ada tempat kosong siang itu. Overall sih makanan dsini biasa aja, satu hal yang aku ngga suka adalah interiornya yang maksa banget untuk ukuran buffet restaurant. Alhasil jalan antar mejanya itu sempit banget.

Selesai lunch, saya balik ke AAPG lagi karena diwajibkan stand by untuk acara award. Ternyata awardnya sendiri dimulai jam 5 sore setelah semua presentasi selesai. Bajigur. Dikerjain dua kali sama panitianya neh. Tau gitu tadi balik motel dulu buat mandi. Akhirnya acara award dengan versi gala dinner ini dimulai. Acara ini lumayan mewah dengan gelas kristal yang diisi wine (tentu ngga saya minum). Belum lagi hidangan menunya yang ngga kalah mewah. Pokoknya meriah dan mewah. Satu hal dari gala dinner yang ngga saya ketahui ini adalah adanya pengumuman untuk honorable student speaker. WHAT THE FREAKIN HELL ? Saya baru tau kalau ada award ini saat itu juga, kenapa ngga bilang dari bulan laluuuuuuu bathinku. Jadi agak skeptis sama award ini, trutama kalau nginget2 lagi presentasi yang rada kacau pagi itu :( .

Tapi sepertinya Allah SWT berkehendak lain. Presentasi saya tadi pagi ~~yang menurut saya ga meyakinkan~~ itu diganjar 'AAPG Honorable Student Speaker Award '. Whoa, such a big surprise that night ! Kocaknya nih, saya sebenernya uda ketiduran di meja gala dinner paling ujung belakang (saking lamanya nunggu tu acara selesai dan saking kekenyangannya). Perlu 3x sampai nama saya disebut, trus terbangun sadar, trus maju ke podium buat nerima award. Mana contact lense ku yang kiri jatuh pula. Alhasil saya maju ke pentas bagaikan orang linglung. Ga jelas banget dah. Antara kaget, seneng, dan malu, pokoke ekseeeeees. Thanks for everyone's big support. ALHAMDULILLAH. :)

Setelah hari kemarin dimabukkan oleh acara AAPG, hari ini adalah hari trakir di Cheyenne. Karena hari terakhir, jelas ini adalah hari untuk jalan". Paginya sempet mampir ke Wyoming State museum. Museum yang terletak di area Capitol Building ini menampilkan history Wyoming yang (buat yang tau geology Rocky Mt dan sejarah America di abad 18-19) kira kira 11-12 sama Colorado. Daerah arid ini dianugerahi berbagai sumber daya alam dari coal, uranium, oil, geothermal, dll. Belum lagi beberapa object wisata America yang pamornya sudah mendunia seperti Rocky Mountain itself dan Yellowstone. Siangnya sempet ikutan rombongan city tour rame" sama orang lain. Jadi dengan membayar $8 kita bisa naik bus 1.5 jam keliling Cheyenne buat tau history nya. Lumayan lah untuk ukuran kota yang kecil banget ini.

Album Review: Adele’s 21 Hurts So Good

Kali ini lagi pengen blogging untuk review album terbarunya Adele. Pertama kali denger suara Adele sekitar 2.5 tahun lali di Prambors FM. Sekali denger langsung klik, beda banget sama genre musik jaman populer itu (yang didominasi oleh Queen of Gimmick : Lady Gaga).

Lalu sekitar 2 minggu lalu baru aja beli CD Adele teranyar '21'. Sekali diputer di CD player kamar, langsung ngga diganti" sampai sekarang ! Let's start then.

Genre : Pop - Soul

Yes, akhirnya singer yang bener" ngejual vocalnya (bukan sex appeal, bukan super nerd costum, bukan electro sound base music, bukan dance super heboh) muncul kembali. Setelah tahun 2008 bikin heboh dengan 'Chasing Pavements' nya, kali ini si blue-eyed singer ini muncul lagi dengan album ngga kalah soulful. Album bertitle '21' (kenapa 21? kata dia itu adalah umur dia pas nulis lagu2nya -_____- jayus tenan alesane) ini bermaterikan lagu lagu patah hati. SEMUA. 100%. No compromise. Cocok buat para galauers dan jablayers. Sempet skeptis pas pertama kali denger 1x cdnya (apalagi kalau baca liriknya). Jangan" abis ngedengerin ini bakal jadi nulis status galau seperti Fatah (GF09) atau Dwikong (GF10) ??? Oh tidakkkk ! Eits, ternyata keraguan itu salah banget. Meskipun semuanya lagu patah hati, tapi setiap musiknya dikemas dengan nuansa sangat heterogen (duile bosone). Ada yang pake dentuman big drum yang kuat banget (Rolling In The Deep, Rumor Has It); ada yang model mellow mendayu" piano doang (Turning Tables, Take It All, Someone Like You); full arsenal music yang bikin lagunya super meriah macem lagi nonton sekaten (Set Fire To The Rain, I'll Be Waiting, He Won't Go), atau sekedar akustikan gitar yang asik buat didenger menjelang bubu (Don't You Remember, Love Song).

Lirik dari semua lagu yang ditulis Adele ini cuma nyeritain tentang mantan cowok terakhirnya saja ! Whoa, such an inspiration to make great music ! Ati" tuh buat yang bakal jadi heartbreaker Adele berikutnya - bakal jadi inspirasi album dia berikutnya ! Salah satu kekuatan musik Adele adalah kejujuran lirik dia. Misal di lagu 'Someone Like You', dia bikin confession sangat manis untuk si mas mantan : Never mind, I'll find someone like you // I wish nothing but the best for you too // Don't forget me, I begged // I'll remember, you said // Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead. Sedangkan di lagu 'Take It All', dia menuturkan introspeksi diri dia sampai pada akhirnya si mantannya tetep aja cabut dari hidupnya : Maybe I should leave // To help you see // Nothing is better than this // And this everything we need // So is it over // Is it really ? Meskipun patah hati, tapi ini bukan album cengeng. Di seluruh liriknya dia nunjukin kedewasaan to go with the flow, memaafkan dan merelakan (si mantan), dan bejibun positive messages. :)

Sebagai seorang vocalist, Adele emang tau bener apa aset terbesarnya : suara soulfulnya. Live performance dia jauh lebih berkualitas daripada rekaman suaranya di album. That what it takes to be great singer. If you consider yourself as singer, you should sang it right. Karena dia punya suara lumayan soulful, dia ngga terlalu nge-showcase kemampuan melisma, uplift, cressendo-nya ala Mariah or Christina. Cukup nyanyi santai dan itu uda bisa membius yang denger. Emosinya pas nyanyi juga dapet banget.

Conclusion :

Albumnya seperti : oase di tengah padang pasir, jarang" nemuin yang kayak gini.

Suaranya mirip" : Amy Winehouse campur Fiona Apple + Regina Spektor.

Lagu favorit : Rolling In The Deep, Take It All, Don't You Remember.

Lagu ngga favorit : Love Song.

Worthed untuk didengerin ? : Absolutely yes !

All life depends on water. It's a precious resource in arid regions such as Colorado where precipitation from rain and snow must meet the needs of wildlife, municipal, agricultural, industrial and recreational users. Given these growing demands, efficient water use in our operations is essential. There are many ways to preserve this resource and they all start with us.

Here are just a few things we can all do to preserve this precious resource :

Always fill reusable water bottle. Americans buy more than 8 billions gallons of bottled water a year and toss more than 22 billion empty plastic bottles in the trash.
Run the clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1.000 gallons a month.
Turn off the water while brushing you teeth and save 25 gallons a month.
Turn the faucet off. For every minute you reduce you faucet use, you save about 1.6 gallons of water.
Install a new low-flow showerhead. It can save 25-50 percent more water.
Xeriscape - over half of the average household's daily water is used on the landscape (whoa !!).

Can an Eclipse Change Earth's Gravity ? (Opinion)

This is purely my opinion. I am not an astrophysicist nor planetary geophysicist. Can an eclipse change earth's gravity ? It depends, it boils down into which eclipse and scale you are talking. However, my notes below is open for discussion.

An eclipse is an astronomical event that happens when one astronomical object is temporarily obscured, either by passing into the shadow of other bodies or by getting other bodies pass between it and the viewer. The term eclipse is most often used to describe either a solar eclipse, when the Moon's shadow crosses the Earth's surface, or a lunar eclipse, when the Moon moves into the shadow of Earth.

Unfortunately, I never heard/read historical daily data on Earth's gravity, because (once again : only my opinion) this is only a function of the Earth's size and mass, both of which are not changing significantly over time. There is only one regular change of the gravitational acceleration over time at a fixed location, and that has to do with the reason for the tides.

The difference between the pull the Sun has on the Earth and the pull the Moon has on the Earth :

1. The equation for gravitation acceleration is G x M / r², where G is the gravitational constant (6.67 x 10^-11 m³kg^-1 sec^-2).

2. The mass of the Sun is 2 x 10³⁰ kg, and the distance is 1.5 x 10¹¹ meters.

3. The Moon is 7.3 x 10²² kg, and the distance is 3.8 x 10⁸ m.

4. Therefore the acceleration from the Sun is .0059 m/s²and from the Moon is .000034 m/s² or 176 times smaller.

Lunar Eclipse

I thought lunar eclipse is basically the same as Moon's phase except the orbital planes of each body do not line up in the same 3D cartesian position (it is not only about how in line horizontally or vertically they are). Thus eclipse does not appear every night.

The influence of the Moon's gravity upon the Earth is the primary source of our ocean tides (local gravitational changes). Newton had found that the attractive force of an object is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the objects. The Moon's gravitational attraction is stronger on the side of the Earth nearest to the Moon and weaker on the opposite side. Since the Earth, and particularly the oceans, is not perfectly rigid it is stretched out along the line toward. For regional scale, I am not sure if Moon's gravity will distract Earth's gravity that much. Since gravity is vector, I would assume it acts as direction dependent unit.
So, does lunar eclipse disturb the Earth's gravity? I would say not really (for regional scale) or definitely yes (the reason for the tides).

Solar eclipse

Different story shares different logic. The first sign that gravity fluctuates during an eclipse was in 1954. French economist and physicist Maurice Allais noticed erratic behaviour in a swinging pendulum when an eclipse passed over Paris. Pendulums typically swing back and forth as a result of gravity and the rotation of the Earth. At the start of the eclipse, however, the pendulum's swing direction shifted violently suggesting a sudden change in gravitational pull.

In 1999, scientists in France experimented pendulum which were set up in many countries, with some in the path of the eclipse and others not. Some of the early results are interesting. Video cameras taped the pendulum movements before, during and after the solar eclipse. Although no change was viewed in the pendulums outside of the eclipse path, two different sites in Europe revealed exciting results. These researchers, which were inside the path of the eclipse, discovered a change in the pendulum's path. If the results are correct, then another mystery was just created. Why would gravity change only in the areas under the eclipse' path? The data's still mystery and needs to be analyzed. However the results have had stumped the scientific game.

Almost ten years later, Geophysicist in China prepared an unprecedented array of highly sensitive instruments at six sites across the country to take gravity readings during the total eclipse due to pass over southern China. Chinese researchers have prepared eight gravimeters and two pendulums spread across six monitoring sites. The team hopes that the vast distance between the sites (roughly 3000 kilometres (1864 miles) between the most easterly and westerly stations), as well as the number and diversity of instruments used, will eliminate the chance of instrument error or local atmospheric disturbances.

Of course, I would assume, there were lots of doubts regarding this super local experiment. Atmospheric changes in temperature or air pressure, people suddenly moving or not moving, or other sudden changes might be good reasons for doubting.

So, does solar eclipse disturb the Earth's gravity? I would go with YES !! And of course gravity is subject to relativity (as Einstein stated in his General Relativity Law) - everything is possible. As for the behavior of a pendulum or gravitimeter during a solar eclipse, we will soon see if this a red herring or not. I'm betting that our understanding of gravity and General Relativity survives this challenge. Of course, carefully run experiments are the ultimate authority here.

BIG SURPRISE ! My last poster on SPWLA will be published in the Petrophysics Journal ! Whoaa - such a ~~bizarre~~ great announcement for rookie like me ! Petrophysics Journal means a lot to me. When I came to the U.S and started to learn rock physics, this journal was the first publication I studied. Most of my thesis' references I got from this journal ! What makes this journal different than any other Geophysics / Geology journal is its specific topic covers on petrophysics, rock physics, drilling, and well log analysis only. So you won't expect to see much seismic section here. Now, having my own paper in the journal I am used to read is really cool ! (tho, I need to start writing the paper!)

Golden Farmer's Market

Salah satu tempat hang out weekend pagi" lumayan asoi di Golden selama summer adalah Golden Farmer's Market. Apa itu? Basically ini semacem 'pasar' dadakan yang digelar hanya di setiap hari Sabtu dalam satu minggu, uda gitu cuma buka dari jam 8-12aja. Tentu pasar dsini bukan kayak pasar Beringharjo (yang kalo mau jalan aja harus adu pantat dulu, mana panas gila) atau pasar Kranggan (yang kalo abis ujan selalu becek). Versi pasar dsini pake tenda" macem penjual merchandise di Soundrenaline. Kenapa Golden Farmer's Market? Soalnya ni event (duile event, apa coba) cuma ekseees 3 bulan saza, dimulai dari awal summer - berakhir di awal fall. Jadi ini ngga ada di musim" lain (so pastilah coy, apalagi winter di Colorado bisa seekstrim -30 C, mending duduk manis deket heater deh). Apa aja yang dijual ? Seputaran makanan. Jadi macem sayuran, telur, pasta, bakery, susu, root beer (beer non alcohol mirip root beernya A&W), dll. Enaknya dsini adalah semua produknya organic, jadi sayuran dan susunya jauh lebih fresh dan enak daripada kalau beli di supermarket macem Kingsooper atau Safeway. Cuma karena dsini semuanya organic - harganya rata" lebih mahal dikit daripada di supermarket. Hiburan disini kadang" ada mini music concert gitu, trus lagu"nya kalau ngga emo (ngga cocok banget dah), country, ya jazz. Kadang ada juga choir dari churches Golden. Paling seru kalau breakfast dsini sambil nongkrong bareng temen, bisa ngobrol sampe 2 jam. Dimana sih lokasinya ? Sekitar 14 blok dari rumah - 25 menit jalan kaki, 15 menit naek sepeda, 5 menit naek skuter, 3 menit naek mobil. Lokasi tepatnya di downtown Golden, daerah 10th St, deket Public Library Golden, deket Lion's Park. Kalau mampir ke daerah ini bawaannya pengen renang & tubing. Maklum deket sama Clear Creek, sungai kecil yang membelah downtown Golden. Tapi kalau summer gini biasanya arusnya deres minta ampun, pernah ada orang hampir tenggelam gara" pusaran airnya uda kayak blender jus. Kadang nih, ada event menarik lainnya di downtown Golden yang digelar hari Sabtu juga, jadi selesai breakfast di Farmer's Market bisa langsung hangout di downtown. Seperti pagi ini ada pameran old cars collection, dimana mobil dari jaman 1909 - 1963 ada dsini semua.
