Kalau bicara tentang Petrology, jadi inget kuliah S1 semester 3 dimana aku ngambil kuliah berbasis ilmu tentang batuan ini. Berbeda dengan mata kuliah geologi struktur yang bikin pusing kepala karena ngga jago imajinasi, makanya ngga masuk jurusan arsitek , petrology adalah salah satu mata kuliah geologi yang aku suka. Sense untuk mendeskripsi batu yang aku pegang / liat di microscope merupakan gairah yang tak terkira *halah*. Berbeda dengan petrology jaman dulu yang berkutat di semua jenis batuan, seminggu terakhir ini aku mendapat kesempatan untuk berguru dengan Prof. James Hower dari University of Kentucky tentang organic petrology. Beliau ini adalah salah satu maestro coal petrology di USA. Publikasinya sudah mencapai 240 dan salah satu editor di Coal Geology Journal dan Elsevier. Basically, coal petrology itu ngga ubahnya seperti ilmu petrology lainnya. Kecuali dsini kita fokus melihat macerals instead of minerals. Macerals untuk coal adalah bagaikan minerals untuk rock. Alhamdulillah. Akhirnya extended abstract untuk Society of Exploration Geophysicist (SEG) San Antonio 2011 kelar juga. Target ngga terlalu muluk-muluk : kalo ketrima ya bagus, ngga juga no problem. Untuk kali ini aku ngincer poster presentation. Ini adalah kali kedua aku ngirim extended abstract ke SEG. Sebelumnya (2009) sempet lolos untuk SEG Region Asia di Beijing. Buat sebagian geophysicists (jelas bukan aku), presentasi di SEG adalah salah satu target besar dalam hidup mereka. Kalau aku? Targetku pengen publish di journal Geophysics dan Nature. Pengen banget. Kalau dua tahun lalu membawa topik skripsi dengan panji panji UGM, kali ini membawa topik thesis dengan panji panji CSM. Kalau dua tahun lalu bawa topic tentang microseismic / earthquake mitigation, sekarang bawa topic tentang rock physics / organic geochemistry. Dimulai tanggal 31 Maret 2011 dan berakhir pada tanggal 2 April 2011, Colorado School of Mines resmi merayakan apa yang disebut Engineering Days (E-Days). Tradisi merayak an salah satu event besar di kampusku ini telah berlangsung selama 77 tahun lho! Menurut sejarahnya, sebagai salah satu sekolah engineering dan geoscience tertua di Colorado, governor Colorado saat itu menganugerahi satu hari perayaan khusus engineering, dari situlah dimulai sejarah E-Days. Meskipun E-Days bukan merupakan hari libur nasional America dan juga bukan hari libur lokal state Colorado, tapi animo masyarakat Colorado sendiri cukup heboh. Terutama warga Golden. Perayaan E-Days di kampus sendiri memang selalu ditunggu" sama para mahasiswa (undergrads trutama). Kenapa? Karena perayaannya sendiri selalu heboh. Mulai dari jalan rame" sepanjang West Colfax sekitar 13km, konser music (band local CO macem Flatboots / Macklemore / Ryan Lewis), casino night and dance, 4x4 volley ball dengan dreskot ala pirat
